TRUE COLORS: The Gusset Project

TRUE COLORS: The Gusset Project is a sprawling community art gallery installed under the El along Kensington Avenue between Lehigh and Tioga. Everywhere a column meets a beam on the iconic structure, there is a triangular connecting plate called a gusset. It is there to strengthen connections. Taking this as inspiration, Mat Tomezsko and the Color Me Back: Same Day Work and Pay Program set out to strengthen connections within the Kensington community. Participants were given a triangle shaped canvas and an open invitation to create freely. Over 12 months, at 30 public events with over 20 community partners, 500 people made 434 paintings. They have been thoughtfully arranged and curated from one to the next over a 1.2 mile stretch of continuous artwork.
